How to set up an SPF record for Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Business Mail

October 15, 2026·6 min read·By MailPilot

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) authorises which mail servers are allowed to send mail on behalf of your domain. For a domain hosted on Yahoo Small Business or Yahoo Business Mail, this means publishing a TXT record that includes Yahoo's sending infrastructure.

Preparing to configure SPF

Before touching DNS, you need:

  • Access to your domain's DNS zone (check whether Yahoo manages your DNS directly, or whether your domain uses a separate registrar/DNS host - this changes where you make the change).
  • Confirmation of whether you send mail from any *other* service on the same domain (a CRM, a marketing tool, a second mailbox provider) - these all need to be in the same single SPF record.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Access your domain's DNS settings. If Yahoo manages your domain's DNS, this is inside your Yahoo Small Business account. If a separate registrar does, log in there instead.
  1. Create the SPF TXT record. The exact Yahoo include mechanism depends on which Yahoo mail product you're on - check Yahoo Small Business's own help documentation for the current include hostname for your specific plan, since this varies by product and should not be guessed. A representative record looks like:
yourdomain.com.    TXT    "v=spf1 include:<yahoo-provided-include> ~all"
  1. Add the record to your DNS, rather than creating a second TXT record if one already exists starting with v=spf1 - merge into the existing one.
  1. Save and allow propagation - this can range from minutes to several hours depending on your DNS host's TTL settings and how recently the zone was last changed.
  1. Verify the record resolves correctly:
$ dig yourdomain.com TXT +short
"v=spf1 include:<yahoo-provided-include> ~all"

Troubleshooting common failures

  • Multiple SPF records. If you had any prior mail setup on this domain, check for a leftover v=spf1 record before publishing a new one - a domain can have only one.
  • Include hostname typo. A single incorrect character in the include value causes a silent SPF failure rather than an obvious error - always verify by re-running the dig lookup rather than just trusting that you typed it correctly.
  • TTL and propagation confusion. If a checker tool still shows the old record shortly after you change it, this is almost always propagation delay, not a configuration error - wait and re-check before changing anything further.

Why this isn't the whole picture

SPF alone authorises sending IPs; it does not sign message content (that's DKIM) and it does not tell receiving servers what to do with mail that fails (that's DMARC). A domain with SPF but no DKIM or DMARC is still exposed to spoofing of its visible From: address in ways SPF alone does nothing to prevent - SPF only checks the invisible envelope sender, not what the recipient actually sees.

What not to do

  • Don't rely solely on a third-party SPF checker's "pass" result without confirming with your own dig query - checkers occasionally cache results and show stale data.
  • Don't publish the SPF record and skip DKIM and DMARC - SPF is necessary but not sufficient for protecting your domain from being spoofed in the From: header recipients actually see.
  • Don't guess at the Yahoo include hostname from an old article - confirm the current value in Yahoo's own current documentation for your specific product tier.

FAQ

Does Yahoo Business Mail support a custom MAIL FROM domain the way some other providers do? This varies by plan and is worth confirming directly in your account's current documentation rather than assuming - don't carry over assumptions from a different provider's setup pattern.

I have both Yahoo Business Mail and a separate marketing tool sending from the same domain - how do I combine SPF? Merge both includes into the one SPF record: v=spf1 include:<yahoo-include> include:<other-provider-include> ~all. Never publish two separate v=spf1 TXT records.

Is SPF alone enough to stop someone from spoofing my Yahoo-hosted domain? No - SPF only authorises the invisible envelope sender. Add DKIM and DMARC to actually protect the visible From: address recipients see, which is what spoofing typically targets.

MailPilot checks SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for every connected mailbox's domain and tracks per-mailbox reputation daily, so a Yahoo-hosted domain's authentication status

If I migrate away from Yahoo Business Mail later, do I need to remove the SPF include immediately? Leaving a stale include in place after migration doesn't actively break anything by itself, but it's good hygiene to remove any mechanism for a service you no longer use, both to reduce lookup count and to avoid authorising infrastructure you no longer control. is something you can verify continuously rather than check once and hope it stays correct.
