Yahoo Emails Bouncing Back: Error Codes, Causes, and Fixes

October 14, 2026·6 min read·By MailPilot

Yahoo Mail, AOL and the rest of the Yahoo estate run on one filtering stack, so a Yahoo bounce usually means an AOL bounce too. The messages are blunt and genuinely informative, which makes them useful diagnostics for your whole sending setup.

Read the code first

421 — temporary, slow down

421 4.7.0 [TSS04] Messages from 1.2.3.4 temporarily deferred

A rate limit. Yahoo is throttling your IP because you are sending faster than your reputation justifies. Do not retry aggressively — that makes it worse. Reduce concurrent connections, slow the per-hour rate, and let your queue back off exponentially. Persistent 421s on a new domain are normal early in a warm-up and should fade as volume history accumulates.

451 — temporary, try later

Usually greylisting or an internal deferral. Legitimate retry behaviour fixes it. If every message gets 451 for hours, treat it as the throttling case above.

553 / 554 — permanent rejection

554 5.7.9 Message not accepted for policy reasons
554 delivery error: dd This user doesn't have a yahoo.com account

Two very different things wearing similar numbers. "This user doesn't have an account" is a hard bounce: remove the address immediately, because repeated sends to dead Yahoo addresses are read as list-quality evidence. "Policy reasons" is a reputation or content rejection against your IP or domain.

5.7.1 with a blocklist reference

If the message names Spamhaus, SORBS or Yahoo's own list, you are blocked rather than filtered. Check the IP on the named list, resolve the underlying cause, then request delisting. Delisting without fixing the cause relists you within days.

[TSS] and [GL] bracketed codes

Yahoo's internal classifiers. TSS codes are throughput and reputation; GL is greylisting. They change without notice, so treat the bracketed tag as a hint and the 4xx/5xx class as the instruction.

The three underlying causes

Reputation. Yahoo weights complaint rate heavily and engagement almost as heavily. Mail that nobody opens, from a sender nobody recognises, gets deferred before it gets rejected. Yahoo's published expectation is a complaint rate under 0.3%; in practice you want it an order of magnitude lower.

Authentication. Since the 2024 bulk-sender rules, Yahoo requires SPF or DKIM plus DMARC alignment for bulk senders, a valid PTR record, TLS, and one-click unsubscribe on marketing mail. Missing any of these turns soft problems into hard rejections.

List hygiene. Yahoo recycles abandoned addresses into spam traps. An old list with Yahoo addresses you have not mailed in a year is the single fastest way to earn a policy block.

Fix sequence

  1. Separate hard from soft bounces in your logs and purge every hard bounce the same day.
  2. Verify authentication end to end — send to a Yahoo mailbox you control and read Authentication-Results in the headers. All three must pass with aligned domains.
  3. Confirm reverse DNS on the sending IP. Yahoo rejects mail from IPs with generic or missing PTR records more readily than Gmail does.
  4. Cut volume and rebuild. If you are being deferred, drop to a fraction of your current rate and ramp again over two weeks. Yahoo responds to sustained good behaviour, not to appeals.
  5. Add one-click unsubscribe (List-Unsubscribe plus List-Unsubscribe-Post) on anything bulk. It reduces complaints, which is the metric that actually moves the block.
  6. Request delisting last, once the cause is fixed, via Yahoo's sender support form.

Preventing the next one

Yahoo is the receiver most sensitive to a cold start, so it is the best early-warning signal in a seed set. If placement at Yahoo degrades before Gmail, you usually have a volume or hygiene problem a week before it becomes visible elsewhere. MailPilot's warm-up ramps Yahoo and AOL mailboxes alongside Gmail and Microsoft, and the per-provider placement view shows which receiver turned first.
