DKIM protects mail you send from being modified in transit and lets receiving servers confirm it genuinely came from your domain's mail infrastructure. If your domain's mail is hosted through Yahoo Small Business or Yahoo Business Mail, DKIM setup happens through that admin interface, which generates the key for you.
What you need before starting
- Admin access to your Yahoo Business Mail / Small Business account.
- Access to your domain's DNS zone (wherever your domain's nameservers point - this may or may not be Yahoo itself).
- Patience for DNS propagation, which can take longer on some registrars.
Generating the DKIM key in Yahoo's admin
Inside the account's domain or email settings, there's a DKIM or "email authentication" section. Enabling it generates a key pair and shows you a TXT record to publish - the selector and public key value are specific to your account, generated at the moment you enable it. Don't copy an example selector from a help article; use exactly what your account's panel displays.
The record will be structurally similar to:
<selector>._domainkey.yourdomain.com. TXT "v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=<long-base64-public-key>"
Publishing and configuring DNS
- Copy the exact record name and value shown in Yahoo's panel.
- Add it as a TXT record in your domain's DNS zone - if your DNS is hosted elsewhere (common if you only use Yahoo for mail, not domain registration), this happens in that other provider's panel, not Yahoo's.
- Save, and allow propagation time before checking.
Verifying the record is live
$ dig <selector>._domainkey.yourdomain.com TXT +short "v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=<public-key-value>"
If this returns nothing, double check you used the exact selector Yahoo's panel gave you - a typo here is the most common cause of "DKIM still showing as not configured" even after you believe you published the record.
Confirming signatures are actually going out
Publishing the DNS record does not by itself start signing mail - confirm Yahoo's panel shows DKIM as active/verified, then send a test message to an external mailbox you control and inspect headers:
DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; d=yourdomain.com; s=<selector>; ...
The d= value should be your domain, and s= should match the selector you published.
Troubleshooting
- DKIM shows unverified in Yahoo's panel after publishing: check for propagation delay first, then check for extra characters (quotes, line breaks) your DNS provider's interface may have mangled when you pasted a long TXT value - some DNS panels require splitting very long TXT values into quoted segments.
- Signature present but DKIM still fails at the receiver: confirm the message wasn't modified in transit by a forwarding or relay step between sending and the receiving check - DKIM signatures break if content changes after signing.
What not to do
- Don't reuse a DKIM selector or key from a different domain or account - keys are generated per domain and are not portable.
- Don't assume DKIM alone fixes deliverability. It only proves the message wasn't altered and genuinely came from a signer who controls that domain - it says nothing about sender reputation or content.

FAQ
My domain's DNS isn't hosted by Yahoo - does that change anything? No, except where you go to publish the record. Yahoo still generates the DKIM key and shows you the exact TXT record to add, but you add it in whichever provider actually hosts your domain's DNS zone, not necessarily Yahoo itself.
Can I rotate the DKIM key later? Yes - generating a new key in Yahoo's admin typically produces a new selector, which you publish alongside (not instead of) the old one temporarily, so mail already signed with the old key still verifies while the new one takes over.
Does enabling DKIM in Yahoo automatically disable SPF or vice versa? No - SPF and DKIM are independent checks that DMARC separately combines. Enabling one doesn't affect the other's configuration; you need both (plus DMARC) for a complete setup.
MailPilot checks DKIM status alongside SPF and DMARC for each domain it monitors, and warms mailboxes with real engagement signals
Is there a cost difference between Yahoo Business Mail plans for DKIM support? DKIM availability and the exact admin flow can vary by plan tier - confirm your specific plan includes email authentication settings before assuming the steps above apply exactly as described.
Can I test a Yahoo DKIM setup before sending to real recipients? Sending a message to a mailbox you control and inspecting its raw headers is the most reliable test - look specifically for a DKIM-Signature header with d=yourdomain.com and confirm the receiving side reports dkim=pass rather than relying on Yahoo's own panel status alone. so a correctly signed message also has the sending history needed to land in the inbox.
